Anima Sound System is a Hungarian electronic band founded in 1993 in Szombathely. Anima is one of the first and most important Hungarian electronic acts, a unique fusion of Eastern-European folk music and modern electronic styles. The band is current under Mole Listening Pearls. The band soon developed strong ties with the underground Tilos Rádió station in Budapest. Their first international performance, in 1996, took place in Vienna at "Soundsfair Festival", (as the only Eastern-European act) along with bands like Red Snapper, Goldie and Nightmares on Wax.

One of the greatest things we’ve come accustomed to here at derooted creative agency is the fine variety of different genres of music offered by iTunes Radio.
Their remix of the Hungarian national anthem, Himnusz, was released on their Bujdosó EP and aired live from Tilos Radio’s New Year party in 2000, then went on to cause controversy in Hungarian media.
Their sound developed from their early acid jazz-influenced albums to a more organic world music tone. Anima Sound System has undergone various changes in lineup since its formation, as well as numerous featured guest artists. Szabolcs Prieger and Zsolt Szabolcs remain from the original lineup, which had also featured Szilvia Bognár on vocals and dj Cadik on decks and turntables.

After touring Eastern European cities and capitals – 8 performances in Prague alone – Anima Sound System has begun to draw interest from Western European promoters – from the “Glasshaus” in Berlin, to “Divan du Monde” in Paris.

Jeremy Jackson is Director of CMBC, the William E. and Mary B. Ritter Professor of Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, and a Senior Scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in the Republic of Panama. He was Professor of Ecology at the Johns Hopkins University from 1971 to 1985. Dr. Jackson is the author of more than100 scientific publications and five books. His current research includes the long-term impacts of human activities on the oceans and the ecological and evolutionary consequences of the gradual formation of the Isthmus of Panama. He co-founded the Panama Paleontology Project in 1986, an international group of some 30 scientists, to help support his isthmian research.

He has also worked extensively on the ecology of coral reef communities and the tempo and mode of speciation in the sea. Dr. Jackson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and received the Secretary’s Gold Medal for Exceptional Service of the Smithsonian Institution in 1997 and the UCSD Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Science and Engineering in 2002. His work on overfishing was chosen by Discover magazine as the outstanding environmental achievement of 2001. He has served on committees and boards of the World Wildlife Fund US, the National Research Council, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, and the Science Commission of the Smithsonian Institution.

In this bracing talk, Jackson lays out the shocking state of the ocean today: overfished, overheated, polluted, with indicators that things will get much worse. Astonishing photos and stats make the case.

Media is not an exciting word in Iran, but believe it or not the advertisement media like newspapers, television channels and print media are going great guns. Iran as a country is complex and multi-layered, with a very intelligent society who has a very clear insight of their glorious past. The Iranian people are very forward looking and one meeting with the youth of Iran will be enough to tell what the youth need and how they get it.

All types of media in Iran is censored by the Islamic regime which has been in the control of this country since the Islamic revolution of 1979. Since then every form of media has come under the state, and all that is seen by the Iranians is under the directive of the state. In that context the advertisement media have to stick to self policing in whatever they say or do, unless they want to be shut down permanently or be punished under the various state laws, usually unknown to the common man. Things took a turn for the better when a moderate government came into power, also bring in media reforms thou still the state have absolute control of all form of state owned media and adverting .With the advent of change came satellite television and the internet, thus for the first time the Iranian people were exposed to international content and advertisement media.

Advertising media normally is in a major way connected to commerce and commerce even in a closed state is needed, and so it is the same in Iran. Iran is a very literate and highly educated society and with education comes certain sophistication. The advertising media with their wares have always been able to attract their attention. The restrictions on certain goods considered un-Islamic didn’t have any space on the state owned media could easily be viewed on the overseas advertisement media. The internet and Satellite TV, which has been banned for more than a decade has brought all forms of ware to people of Iran. They being fashion conscious and even wanting simple things such as t-shirts and starved for what happening on the world scene have found these media a health source of news and advertisement.

Also external channels like voice of America and scores of media channels with programming in the Persian language controlled by people of Iranian origin staying outside Iran have a very steady following with the youth of Iran. All media is dependent upon advertisements thus many business can be found promoting themselves on these channels. The people of Iran over the years have developed a healthy dose of skepticism and do not take any form of adverting media at its face value. They have learned to read behind every line, be they the advertising media from the state or broadcasted from outside Iran.

It demonstrates how ads for beauty and hygiene products use foreign phrases, mainly English and French, to position them in reference to Iranian notions of quality, prestige or style. It also notes how advertisers strategically select words from regional languages including Mazandarani, Azeri and Kurdish to alternately activate local or national associations.

Dosh

Dosh grew up in the Twin Cities. At a young age he also took piano lessons and then discovered FM radio in the early ’80s. Dosh began drumming at age 15. By the time he left home for Simon’s Rock College at age 16, he had decided music would likely be his profession, however, he subsequently got a degree in creative writing.

Throughout the ’90s, he played with a number of bands on the East Coast. When he moved back to Minneapolis in 1997, he started his own band, as he had begun to compose his own music. He also worked at his alma mater, Lake Country School, teaching percussion, driving the school bus, and assisting classroom teachers. Immersing himself in the local scene, Dosh played with many bands over the next five years: Nasty Goat, Best Red, Animals Expert At Hankering, Iffy, Vicious Vicious, “T,” and Lateduster; all this time, recording tape after tape of original music on a 4-track machine.

Dosh’s work with Andrew Broder in Lateduster and Fog gave him an experience that helped him begin to perform solo. In 2002, he released his debut recording, Dosh CD, which he had recorded himself, mostly in his basement. The CD developed a following in the local Twin Cities scene.

After playing many shows, City Pages voted him second on their annual “picked to click” list.

Dosh CD was re-released internationally in September 2003 on anticon. records, and was reviewed in the Village Voice, Urb, Flaunt, Xlr8r, The Big Takeover, and a number of online magazines.

Dosh is also known for the incorporation of his family life into his work. His EP, Naoise is named after his son. On “Naoise” is “Happy Song for Tadgh,” a reference to Naiose’s half-brother, Tadgh. He is also known for writing a song for his future wife at the time called, “I Think I’m Getting Married.”
